My photographic journey of Dubai so far has painted it as a city of futuristic buildings and bright lights. But part of the old town feels a world away from such modernity, especially the souk.

This is a low-rise, bustling place where gold, spices and all manner of everyday items are sold like they have been for centuries. The aromas are strong and enticing, the colours exotic.

While this was an assault on the senses, it didn’t compare to the labyrinthine souks of Morocco, almost medieval in character where it’s quite easy to get lost. In some senses, like Dubai as a whole, it felt quite modern.
