Elegant canopy
Intricate metal arches, gracefully curved and painted in distinctive colours.
This grand Victorian sight is found close to the City of London. Its grandeur forms part of Smithfield Market, the capital’s main wholesale meat market. Bathed in light, this elegant canopy is a dream for the lens.
The Smithfield building was an unscheduled stop on a photographic walk of this area of London, which will appear here soon.
That is the piece of art. I mean the arches and your picture, Mike. You are finding something extraordinary all the time.

Thank you very much, Alexander. I’m lucky to live in a city where there are many intriguing sites such as this.

That really is wonderful. It’s a shame we seem to have lost the desire to build beauty; most modern constructions seem to focus purely on function and cost which leads to some pretty dull buildings that no one would want to last for hundreds of years anyway!

I couldn’t agree more. They even managed to build this for a market – vision and beauty even for something relatively humble.
