The Photographers’ Gallery
Tucked just behind the hustle of London’s Oxford Street is The Photographers’ Gallery. It’s a space over a number of floors dedicated to exploring photography as an art form. It has a shop selling refurbished film cameras, which sparked my purchase of a vintage Olympus point and shoot.
I spent time studying Human Rights Human Wrongs, a striking and challenging exhibition of landmark photojournalism from some of the trouble spots of the 20th century. But then I sat back with my camera and considered the order and beauty of the gallery spaces and observing other visitors. It became a case of taking shots of people as they were engaged in the business of looking at other photographs.
If you are in London and you’re looking for a haven of photography, I would make time for a visit to Ramillies Street.
It’s a shame there’s always too much to do in London – a good problem for those who live there!

I’ve only been there once, Mike, but it’s a great little gallery – as your photographs testify! :D

That was my first time too! How good is the purple for monochrome exhibits?

It definitely helps them stand out; white backgrounds can be quite stark.

Looks like a wonderful space to display photographic exhibitions and I love the coloured walls. I’ve heard it said that photos ‘should’ be displayed on a neutral grey wall but these look fantastic. The creative angles on your shots I love because it makes me want to see more. Great post Mike.

Thank you very much, Lee. It’s a great space and I was also very taken with the purple walls. There is no shortage of visitors either. I think my favourite gallery is on the upper floor which has that view. Make a note for your London trip :)

Ah, these are with my workhorse Fuji. But thank you anyway, Koos :) The exhibition was quite hard-going, with some challenging images. But well worth a look.

Oh, sorry, I’ve misread it. Anyway, beautiful photos. Did you get inspired by the exhibition?

I was inspired to take photos of other people for a change. But the exhibition was hardcore news photojournalism which I can’t see as being my thing.
