Winter wonderland
Much of the UK has had its first taste of winter. Here in central Manchester, the show of snow was disappointing.
But in the lower reaches of the Pennines on the edge of Greater Manchester, we found a wintry wonderland. The hills near Marple were transformed to create a very memorable walk.
Snow can be a serious challenge to photograph – time to furiously adjust the white balance and find what colour you can. Worth the freezing fingertips…
Lucky you to have some snow! Apart from being envious :) I really like the Line of trees; it has a wonderfully ‘painterly’ feel to it ….. but how I dislike that word!!

Ha, yes! Who came up with that? It seems to do the job, though. It was lovely up in the hills but is usually damp in the bowl where Manchester sits.

Lovely shots again, Mike. You’ve struck a nice balance between the wide, sweeping snowy landscapes and the intimacy of shots like Snow Line. Great work, and definitely worth enduring icy extremities! :)

Thanks so much Richard! The purity of the snowfields has long since been replaced by something milder and wetter. Til the next time…

Wonderful series of cold as we swelter in another Aussie summer :)

I can imagine what it’s like way down south, Lee! Sadly it’s all gone but today there is a very eerie, creeping blanket of thick fog.

Ohhh! I do like fog, or mist as we generally get here. Now thick fog is another thing :)

Yes it’s less fun. But a lot better than the notorious pea soupers of the 1950s! It’s still a bit murky today. Can be great for moody photos :)

Yes I could imagine that!

The Line of Trees is absolutely my favourite!

Is that because it has Dutch symmetry and simplicity? ;)

And the suspense of the grey trees and the snow.
