Darkness illuminated

Granary Square vistaThis is a sight to pierce a gloomy London late afternoon when darkness has already fallen.

The colourful light and water installation plays in Granary Square, in front of the handsome new building of Central Saint Martins arts college. I admit to stumbling across it by accident, and was quickly swept away with attempts to photograph it.

Its complicated sequence of water jets, illuminated by many colours, proved a challenge. I tried a very high ISO and shorter exposures, the complete opposite to this, together with a host of angles. The “fireworks” shot (above) was my favourite among many blurred disasters, while the foam residue was unexpectedly beautiful.

I’d just been warned about taking photographs here – but it wasn’t stern enough to send me away from this place without any shots.
