Summer hike

It’s been a long hot summer so far, and walking in the hills is a different experience.

Out go the waterproofs and thick coats and in with sunblock, light clothing and plenty of water.

This was a walk above the village of Chinley in Derbyshire’s Peak District, talking in Cracken Edge. It affords great views and signs the landscape is parched.

I slipped my lighter Fuji X100T in my rucksack for our walk, which copes admirably with a sweeping vista.

An Essex isle

Mersea Island in Essex, eastern England comes as a revelation even to someone born and raised in the county.

Its west side is quite well-populated with houses, shops and good roads. But even this area offers sweeping views out to sea and across the estuaries, beaches packed with beautiful shells. There are also some bustling seafood restaurants where you can eat local oysters if that appeals.

The east is a coastal nature reserve and country park with beaches largely untroubled by signs of human civilisation, where landscape photography is a must. Here are just a few shots from a memorable afternoon spent on this Essex island.

Mersea shore

An image from a holiday weekend visit to Mersea Island, part of Essex in eastern England. This stretch of coastline is a recognised place of natural beauty. It was a warm summer’s day, maybe one of the last we will see, and many people were enjoying this unspoilt seaside.

With a beautifully contoured sky and the layers created by the sand, sea and wooden fences, this was an irresistible spot for some landscape photography. I’ll share a gallery of Mersea Island views in the coming days.
