My home city and source for many shots – London – hasn’t fared too well with only three in the top 10. A trio of night photographs from the coastal town of Brighton rate very highly, with two of them at the top of the pile. Images of Morocco and Dubai’s futuristic Burj Khalifa also feature. Let me know what you think of the results.

Primrose Hill

A wonderful summer escape in London is to visit one of its many green spaces. An even greater joy is to clamber up one of the city’s vantage points and witness a sun-scorched day slowly turn to evening, and then night when the capital’s illuminated buildings twinkle beneath you.

We chose Primrose Hill just north of the city, where many people had gathered to relax and witness the end of the day. The views were cloaked in a summer haze which made it hard to create the sharpest of captures. You have to brave the winter temperatures to get the clearest views.

It was a time to watch people, observe them bathing in the moment – and enjoy seeing the city below.

Taking in the view

A young couple enjoy the view across London from Primrose Hill, a vantage point north of the city. A fine summer’s day was gradually turning into evening.

It was an irresistible capture, despite my reluctance to take candid shots. They seem as one, and as if nobody else was around. But the hill was humming with people, relaxing and enjoying an escape close to the capital.

The full story of seeing day turn to evening from high above London will be told soon.
