Manchester: November in 15 images

November in the north of England. Is it all cold, miserable and wet weather as the dark nights take hold?

Here in Manchester I spend most days capturing the city’s architectural growth and how weather shifts from one day to the next.

I’m armed with my trusty 12-year-old Fuji or Samsung mobile, now a handy mainstay after a reluctance to use it as a camera.

They produce different results, but my eye often looks upwards and maybe doesn’t see the Manchester that many people expect.

Here’s November through my lens. I’m heading to warmer climes as it draws to a close – more on that next time.

January in 15 photographs

January is said to be the most thankless, depressing of the winter months.

The joy of Christmas has passed and we’re left with freezing temperatures and dark days.

This year I didn’t escape to warm, tropical shores. I stayed in Manchester and saw snow and thick fog come and go.

But I made the most of bright, chilly days and chased our city’s new architecture while it shone.

My only trip was to the coastal town of Morecambe, on the edge of a still, icy arm of the Irish Sea which had a captivating magic.

How has this long, cold month been for you?

The darker months

Winter in Manchester. The days are shorter and darker.

On my daily walks around the city with my phone in my pocket, I try to find colour and light in these harder times.

I was lucky enough to travel to a warm country in January and missed some snowfall and winter storms. But it’s not over yet and we’re still waiting for the release that Spring brings.

A Christmas collection

Bah humbug. It’s no secret that I’m not a huge fan of Christmas.

But the warm lights and cold December weather are beautiful to photograph. READ MORE BELOW

I must have an affection for Christmas lights because I’ve been photographing them for years without even realising it.

My last London flat was bright and white enough for still life sessions, while Manchester and Salford have been providing light and chill since 2016.

In 2018 I passed over a familiar Christmas with a memorable trip to Chile, where the varied and grand landscape took centre stage.

Whether you’re a Scrooge or a bright-eyed Christmas elf, enjoy the festivities.

Winter sunshine, Manchester

Winter. Howling winds, driving rain and slate grey skies are no fun.

But when it’s freezing cold and the sun is shining, walks are bracing and photographs shimmer.

Here are the fruits of recent walks around Manchester when the light was beautiful.

Autumn leaves radiated, canals dazzled with reflections and new buildings were stellar against crisp blue backdrops. What a time to be alive with a camera…
