Disco tunnel

This was an accidental discovery made on a mission to take photographs of London’s superskyscraper The Shard. A long traffic and pedestrian tunnel runs some of the length of Bermondsey Street, an area close to London Bridge and the South Bank of the Thames.

This disco-like effect was a little baffling at first, shifting colour regularly and serving no particular purpose. I stopped to take some shots but didn’t get very far – the illuminations can produce up to 16 million different colours – mind-boggling!

The evening light was pretty dim in the tunnel, and around one second of exposure was needed. I didn’t stop to set up my tripod and had to make do with breathing in and holding steady.

If I had the time and the inclination, I would capture a long sequence of the tunnel lights playing. That would make one hell of a composite shot.
