Cold warmth

A winter sunset during the darkest time of the year is a tough act to follow. As the cold seeps in, the sky sees fit to give its fieriest display. It almost beats a sun-kissed tropical sundown.
This is taken from the balcony of our west London loft space, silhouetting the large, graceful tree and its neighbour which has been savagely pollarded. A plane crosses the flight path too. The third image is a response to the intense colours of this sight. They have been gently lifted out to give a subtle, muted view of one of nature’s greatest shows.

Fiery indeed. I rather like the starkness of those pollarded trunks – somehow that gauntness seems a clever contrast to the drama of the sky

Thank you Lee! Well I only had to fling open the balcony doors, so the hardship wasn’t so bad. The biggest fireball I ever saw was over Cairns, so Aus still has it. It was steaming hot, though.

Yep, we do stinking hot really well, as it has been for the last few days here. Humidity included with huge thunderstorms at night. You get the idea.

There often seems to be more fire when it’s dark and cold (I think)…

That’s interesting..I have to watch that and see if I see the same. I know the winter tends to give more pastel type sunrises.

The northerly winters here seem to produce the real fire… there must be some scientific explanation for that, whatever it might be!

Well it’s the same one… a very intense display. I think northern winters produce really strong sunsets. I missed a sunrise the other week for the very same reason :(
