Stately seating

This elegant bench looked so neat that I couldn’t sit on it – I took its photograph instead.

If you roam the beautiful grounds of Osterley Park in west London, there are no shortage of spots to rest your weary legs, from logs in the woods to stately seats close to the house at the centre of the estate.

I’ll share more from this London oasis with you soon.

Mundane metalwork

Street furniture fascinates me. It’s the lines, shapes and robust functionality of these objects which fill our everyday lives and are usually passed by without a second glance.

This small selection was shot in macro and found nearby. Memorial garden benches, a dirty handrail and a fence adorned with crucifixes were found at a modern Polish Catholic church.

I also turned the camera on the metal railings outside my own house. The small, mundane things in life really do count – and have their own fascination.

Back to the benches

An autumn walk in Ravenscourt Park, west London. This is the place to find some light, air and nature close to my home in west London. These trio of benches are a familiar sight. They sit enclosed in a grassed area and don’t seem to attract many sitters.

This is also a photographic revisit. I took a shot of these seats a year ago, and it became the first post on my Flickr feed.

A year is a long time in photography, and this time I wanted to attain a more adventurous angle and stronger contrast in the edit. The original seems safer, while the composition is less than sharp. Personally, I’m happier with the return to the benches. Do you agree?…

As a footnote, there is something irresistible about capturing empty seats, whether they’re in Ravenscourt or an entire row of them in Battersea Park across London.
