Manchester: Ship Canal stroll

My favourite local walk from home in Castlefield, Manchester is along the Manchester Ship Canal to Salford Quays.

You’ll find water (of course), city trams running along the route – and a whole lot of architecture.

The area is being developed rapidly and I like checking on how the buildings and skyline are taking shape.

That evening after I’d taken my walk, Manchester was blessed with a spectral, spectacular dusk. This is captured from my balcony which doesn’t even face the direction of the sunset.

Here’s a gallery of recent moments here in Manchester, from walks, passing the time of day and appreciating this vibrant city.

On a warm summer’s morning I laid down in the shadow of Deansgate Square, our tallest buildings.

There was a dusk walk along the Manchester Ship Canal when the sky was dramatic and reflections pristine. A stunning, vibrant sunset and capturing a city centre robin complete the set.

Dusk on the quays

Whoever said that Manchester and its sister city of Salford are grey and rain-sodden might like to reconsider. If you take a dusk stroll by the waterways at Salford Quays by the end of the Manchester Ship Canal, you may be treated with a fantastic spectacle. The sunsets here are rich and golden and the modern buildings glint in the light.

I used my new lightweight Fuji X100T for these photographs. It performed nicely, although the fixed lens and lack of zoom means the legs have to do some extra work to nail down that desired frame.
