Bike rides and herring

As the London autumn seeps in, this final set of photographs from Sweden becomes a memoir of the Scandinavian summer. We took two day trips outside Stockholm, to Gripsholm Castle and the island of Uto in Stockholm’s archipelago.

This is a snapshot of quiet little beaches and country lanes on the island, and a royal retreat surrounded by manicured grounds and lapping waters. And yes, this was Sweden – there were bicycles to ride and pickled herring to feast upon.

By the lake

By the lakeA lakeside vision. The stillness of the water. A tantalising view of the other shore. The symmetry of the carefully cultivated and pruned trees. Only the best is good enough for royalty, in this case the royals of Sweden. I captured this view at the castle of Gripsholm, set on an island 60km to the west to the Swedish capital Stockholm on a Scandinavian summer’s day. Well worth a visit…

This feature grabbed my attention on a recent trip to Newcastle and Gateshead in the north-east of England. It’s a street sculpture next to a modern building, seemingly a cluster of large nails artfully positioned on a plain wall. The angles and positioning made it a must-shoot, with different points to focus on. Sometimes it’s the small details that count in photography.

A higher plane

A higher planeYou cannot visit a cathedral without looking aloft to enjoy its impressive height and ornate ceilings. That’s where I end at Norwich Cathedral in eastern England, capturing the building’s beautiful roof space. It’s tempting to lie down in this pursuit, but that seems inappropriate – and mirrors are provided to easily glimpse the upward divinity. Unmissable.

Trinity

This is an amazing space. It was built to inspire and continues to do so. But it’s also tricky to capture in photographs, with its vast elevations and dimensions. Even on a sunny day, the light can be hard to capture, although it can create some wonderfully subtle shade and shadowing. It’s stunning.
