The Lancashire seaside
My latest exploration of Manchester’s expansive hinterland took me north to Lancashire. The coastal resort of Lytham St Annes is close to Blackpool, but a world away from its neighbour’s glitzy, brash vibe.
I walked from St Anne’s and its green pier along a tranquil, sombre stretch of tidal coastline to Lytham, with its curious windmill and grand white-tiled church. It’s also on the estuary of the River Ribble – calm, mysterious and perfect for wide skyscape photographs.
This trip veered from brash man-made colours to stark minimalism. The kind of contrast I favour on a photo excursion…
I have to say, I love Lytham. Blackpool has its pull, of course, but Lytham is much more genteel. Yet again, you have brought out the best of an out-of-season seaside town – Slender Threesome annoys me, though. I know the horizon is straight, but the wonkyness of the middle lamppost is jarring, haha! :)

I know, Richard, me too! I will have to contact Fylde council to get it realigned :) They weren’t all in a row, obviously. Glad I didn’t attempt Blackpool on the same day. This was enough to feast on.

Thank you Koos. Hmmm, I can’t think why you might be keen on the windmill ;-)

I love the composition of the mill. I’m not a windmill-groupie ;)

You must get weary of that Dutch stereotype. And thank you :) The white against a dreary grey sky worked quite well after all.

Lovely perspective. Thanks for showing me things I missed when there in April.

Thank you very much, Bunty :) Ah, you came up north too. Not just Scotland which is a whole other ball game. I felt chastised for eating pie and chips on the street at Lytham!

I have a second cousin in Lytham, and stayed in St Annes. I did see the underside of the pier!

Lovely! Next time you should walk south from St Annes to the windmill and estuary. A lovely stroll.
