Hotel

It’s a picture of style, class and grace to soothe the weary traveller’s eye. There is space and symmetry – even the luggage trolleys seem to be working in harmony.

This is the Corinthia Hotel in Budapest, our home for two nights in the Hungarian capital. It was impossible not to roam around a little to capture the lines and shapes of the building in the little time that was spent there.

I’m no expert in the art of hotels, but Miret Padovani of Flanerie Feminine is a seasoned traveller and hotel guest whose sumptuous site you may like to visit.

Tate in the frame

Tate Britain sign

This major London gallery on the north bank of the Thames houses a dazzling wealth of British art. It has been a little overshadowed by Tate Modern, its sibling across the river and more obvious tourist draw.

But I was here to see the impressive shell that houses Tate Britain, recently refurbished to the tune of £45 million with a new staircase and reopened balconies.

The building’s central sweep with all its Neo-classical grandeur is just as impressive. On a quiet day, it’s possible to capture these features without the interruption of visitors – or just simply let them wander into shot.

Behind London’s doors

It was Open House London weekend recently, giving ordinary people the chance to see buildings that are not usually accessible. This also meant freedom to photograph some of the city’s hidden architectural gems.

We visited five central London buildings – Unilever House, an older shell containing a very modern atrium, the Art Deco brilliance of the former Express Building at 120 Fleet Street, The Royal Courts of Justice, the imposing Freemasons’ Hall and the grandeur of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office headquarters in Whitehall.
