Summer skylights

This is a taste of summer life living in a roof space. A sky of solid blue is captured in the tilted windows, and in a variety of hues. Metal and wooden layers encase its cloudlessness. This collection of layered captures have something pure and exhilarating in their abstract neatness.

And there’s also another favourite view from the other side of the roof space, where summer sundowns impress on many an evening. I won’t be in this place for much longer, while summer will inevitably slide into autumn. Best enjoy it while it lasts…

Summer houses

A corner of London’s Hyde Park has sprouted a clutch of summer houses. These pieces of artful architecture are an extension of the Serpentine Gallery’s annual Pavilion, this year a tall, elaborate and elegant structure made up of individual boxes.

The star of the show has to be Asif Khan’s contribution, a very attractive formation of tall white struts which reach into the sky and capture light and form. And yes, there’s seating in the middle. There’s plenty of time to join other Londoners who have wandered around these installations – they will be in the park until 9 October. Oh, and bring your camera…

Pavilion

Every summer, a temporary building springs up outside London’s Serpentine Gallery. It’s a work of architecture which leans heavily into the world of art. This year is no exception, thanks to Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and his collaborators.

On the face of it, you’d call this a whole load of knitted-together boxes. The structure is 14 metres tall and attains a series of elegant and eye-bending curves, seems to change colour and is more than enough to keep you transfixed. It would be easy to take hundreds of shots.

A lot of people come to the Pavilion and seem to use it as a mesmerising pit stop. So it’s also a great spot for candids and ‘street’ photography, using the structure as very convincing cover. It’s here until 9 October – plenty of time to come and take a look.

Five-a-day

This edible goodness is mouth-watering fare for the photographer too. I took a selection of the more attractive, beguiling vegetables and fruits and made them my models for a sunlit indoor session. Red chicory, Babycorn, Flower Sprouts and three gorgeous varieties of tomatoes were heaped with attention.

But the star of the show is Romanesco, a complex whirl that is a natural work of art. A series of beautiful film shots of this vegetable by Canadian photoblogger Ehpem was the inspiration for this shoot.

We won’t be short of our five-a-day for some time in this household…
