Gone fishin’

My trip to the Spanish island of Fuerteventura involved some people watching. The other tourists – particularly fellow British ones – are always a source of fascination and bemusement.

But on the shores of the colourful town of Corralejo, it was another species that warranted photographic attention. Fishing is a popular pastime, and cuts across nationalities and age here.

During one lunch in the sun, I observed a young Spanish man on the shoreline, his blue shirt melding with the azure waters as he deftly hauled in a catch, barefoot and without fear of the rocks. And of course he was totally unaware that he was being photographed as he went about his task.

Another scene from the jetty sees British visitors milling about as two people are fishing. By chance I captured a young woman absorbed in the act of taking a photo – just like I was.

This marks the last of my posts from the island. An extensive gallery will follow soon, including several shots which have not yet been featured.

Canarian sunset

Canarian sunsetWhen you’re in another part of the world, chasing the sunset is an essential activity – and that’s an even more enjoyable sport if you have a camera to hand.

On the sun-blessed island of Fuerteventura, one of Spain’s Atlantic territories off the North African coast, the sunset is well worth catching. If you have a bell tower to see it from, all the better – more on that soon.

Some would call this pure, unadulterated sky porn. But I think it’s one of the most captivating moments you can be lucky enough to photograph.

Desert island layers

I’ve returned from a trip to the island of Fuerteventura with my camera a little sandier and more used than before my departure.

It’s part of Spain’s Canary islands, basking in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Africa. It’s a fairly rocky, dry outcrop boasting very warm weather, sparkling colours – and even Sahara-esque sand dunes.

This taster shot says it all in a layered cake – electric blue sky, azure waters, plenty of sand and a modern tarmac road through the middle. It was a fruitful place for photography, and I’ll bring you more from the island in forthcoming posts.
