Lilium Asiatica

A magnificent bunch of Asian Lilies. There’s little to match these flowers’ exuberant beauty and heady perfume that fills a room.

This spray came tightly closed and unfurled over a few days.

They are still displayed on my mother’s memorial table and are a fitting tribute.

Shades of white

On the rare occasions that flowers come into my possession, I want to make them last beyond their fragile lifespan.

This beautiful spray of white tulips marked an occasion of great sadness, but it was a great joy to photograph them in all their delicacy.

An act of remembrance in many ways.

What’s in a portrait?

I’m not a photographer of people. I prefer the ease and reliability of landscapes, architecture and, well, objects. If figures do make their way into my frames, it’s in moments of candour or they just happen to waft into the frame.

So this is a rare venture. Mike is sitting on a favourite armchair in my apartment, gazing out at the canal. He looks serious yet relaxed. While he knew I was there with the camera, the only direction from me was not to pose, just to let the photograph happen.

What’s made me interested in portraiture? Well, it’s when you find yourself a willing sitter who is actually pleased that you want to take their photograph. It helps if you have a connection to them and want to capture their likeness, mood and their moments. Sharing the results with them and ensuring you’re both happy completes the circle of portrait creation. Can you really do this with a building?…

Architectural cool

This building sits on a small island in Doha, capital city of Qatar. It’s only been opened since 2008 but has fast become a must-see part of any visit.

For me, the Museum of Islamic Art became less about its beautiful treasures and more about this standout piece of architecture. The geometric pile of cool white stone dazzles against the blue skies of an Arabic winter, full of sharp lines and cool detail. Inside, the clean theme continues, and there is a show-stopping central atrium, topped with a beautiful skylight.

This may well be my favourite building in the world so far. Take a look for yourself…

4th floor bridge

Tate metalLondon’s Tate Modern gallery has undergone a big expansion. It’s now home to Switch House, a capacious 10-storey extension. But it’s been connected to the existing core of the building by new walkways. The new 4th floor bridge gives you a new, heightened perspective on the vast Turbine Hall, home to huge installations where the Tate’s industrial past blasts through. Here are just two architectural views from a new viewpoint.
