Manchester sunsets

Do you prefer watching sunsets on a tropical beach or on a cold winter’s afternoon?

The tropics every time? Well here in Manchester dusk can be spectacular and seems more intense in the winter months.

These two sunsets were captured from the Deansgate-Castlefield walkway next to the tram lines, close to my home.

The area’s new high rises, a confusion of tram wires and rooftop silhouettes add more to Manchester sunset photos.

What do you think? Would you still prefer that warm beach?

Moon over Shepherds Bush

Moon over Shepherds Bush

A dark night outside our window. The frame is dominated by the silhouettes of neighbourhood trees and an aerial on a rooftop. But the slender crescent of the moon with its delicate luminescence takes centre stage, poised in a dark blue sky.

2014 moments #1

I would like to share my 10 most memorable photographs of the year over the next 10 days with you. These are shots that I am particularly proud of, while each evokes a sense of place and meaning from 2014.

GALLERY WITH A VIEW

This photograph was taken on a visit to London’s Tate Modern art gallery. It is the upper floor cafe, which offers a spectacular view over the city, with the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral dominating the sight. I saw this frame as soon as I exited the lift, and wanted the figures to be in silhouette against the skyline. I like the result. It’s been another year of capturing this great city, and this is a London favourite.

Cold warmth

A winter sunset during the darkest time of the year is a tough act to follow. As the cold seeps in, the sky sees fit to give its fieriest display. It almost beats a sun-kissed tropical sundown.

This is taken from the balcony of our west London loft space, silhouetting the large, graceful tree and its neighbour which has been savagely pollarded. A plane crosses the flight path too. The third image is a response to the intense colours of this sight. They have been gently lifted out to give a subtle, muted view of one of nature’s greatest shows.

A tale of two skies

Dorville at sundown

Anger

Britain is an island of tempestuousness at the moment. Sultry air has been pushing in from the south, leading to dramatic thunderstorms. While many people have been capturing impressive lightning strikes, I photographed what threatened to be the prelude to a storm.

On one side of the sky, there was beautifully pink-tinged sundown. But on the other side swirled dark, foreboding clouds. They eventually came to dominate the rooftops over my west London street, sweeping the tranquil sunset away. There was an impressive shower of rain, but the full sound and light show seemed to pass us by this time.

Everyone loves a sunset, but I am taken with the texture of the black clouds. Which do you prefer?…
