Manchester moments

Here’s a gallery of recent moments here in Manchester, from walks, passing the time of day and appreciating this vibrant city.

On a warm summer’s morning I laid down in the shadow of Deansgate Square, our tallest buildings.

There was a dusk walk along the Manchester Ship Canal when the sky was dramatic and reflections pristine. A stunning, vibrant sunset and capturing a city centre robin complete the set.

Do you think the best things in life are free?

Sunsets: 19 days that ended memorably

A week of lively weather here in the UK has resulted in a run of spectacular sunsets.

It made me think about the many sundowners I’ve captured over the years, close to home in Manchester and on my travels.

This collection brings together the sunsets I always remember and can almost feel to this day.

Anyone who doesn’t marvel at a sunset is missing a piece of their humanity. Do you agree?

Dramatic sunset looking towards Salford

And here’s the latest memorable sunset from this week. I was looking across to the growing skyline of Salford with the water of the Bridgewater Canal in the foreground. Very stormy skies for the middle of May.

Manchester sunsets

Do you prefer watching sunsets on a tropical beach or on a cold winter’s afternoon?

The tropics every time? Well here in Manchester dusk can be spectacular and seems more intense in the winter months.

These two sunsets were captured from the Deansgate-Castlefield walkway next to the tram lines, close to my home.

The area’s new high rises, a confusion of tram wires and rooftop silhouettes add more to Manchester sunset photos.

What do you think? Would you still prefer that warm beach?

Stately Cheshire

Tatton Park is a grand mansion with sumptuous grounds which was once home to a very privileged family. But these days, it attracts thousands of visitors and is an excellent day trip from Manchester.

There are formal gardens, water features and even an old potting shed to explore, while an orchid show was a dazzling side attraction. The house is exquisitely decorated. Photography is permitted but the light is kept very low, which may have proved to be an unexpected advantage…

Moonlight over Manchester

My urban view of Manchester doesn’t fail to enthrall. The soaring grace of Beetham Tower, the twinkly lights of canalside Castlefield and the trams passing overhead. One night recently there was a spectacular bonus – a large moon against a slightly clouded sky, rising into the sky and passing behind the city’s tallest building on its travels. Time for a spot of howlingly enjoyable long exposure photography…
