Beautiful Triffids

I bought two bunches of these popular wedding flowers for the first time and wasn’t impressed. Read more below

The stalks of my Freesias seemed too tall and spindly, with the blooms perched on top like Triffids. And I was none too keen on their pungent fragrance.

It wasn’t until I photographed these flowers at close quarters that I appreciated their beauty, with delicate mauve and robust pastel pink and yellow petals.

By using a variety of backgrounds, these specimens became photogenic and versatile. I wonder what’s next in my ongoing indoor floral project?

Minus two

Freezing bright

The first truly bitingly cold morning of the winter. Our loft space has already been deluged by rain, but this time the frost clung onto the slanting roof windows, fighting against brilliant sunshine. The macro lens came into its own, catching the natural wonder and abstract glory of the invading iciness.

Freezing macro

How quickly weather can change in Great Britain. Now, it’s around 10C with the threat of showers thanks to prevailing and mild Atlantic systems. Just last week even in west London, the temperature barely reached above freezing and the urban landscape was caked in snow.

I wrapped up warm with the intention of taking some close-up shots. Plants, cars, motorbike headlamps, garden walls and even discarded Christmas trees were found by my lens. The only problem was it was so chilly that keeping a steady hand for these photographs was not easy.

Droplets

Blue waterdrops

It’s a great pleasure of life when an insignificant, mundane detail manages to catch your eye. And if it’s compelling enough to be captured on camera, the joy and satisfaction is multiplied.

These shots are a case in point. The sunlight filtering through the bathroom blind catches a scattering of water droplets on the edge of the bath, which have rested there since the morning shower.

The white photograph is more subtle and shows a hint of white shower curtain in the background. With a cool blue filter, another shot brings the drops to the foreground, and makes them stand out.

The smaller details in life – and taking photographs of them – can possess value beyond their worth.
