New Tate Modern

One of London’s major visitor attractions has grown. Tate Modern, a vast repository of art, has an entire new wing. This distinctive twisted pyramid of a building is 10 storeys tall and a fitting addition to the main building, once a vast power station.

The stylish, spartan interior is an expanse of exposed concrete and untreated blond wood, while the windows are partly covered with the lattice of brickwork enveloping the exterior. The building is topped with a viewing platform which draws the crowds away from the art and to views of London.

This large new public space is as busy as the original gallery. But it was easy to capture pure architecture – and photograph visitors as they went about their business and interacted with this fresh place.

2014 moments #8

I would like to share my 10 most memorable photographs of the past year over the coming days with you. These are shots that I am particularly proud of, while each evokes a sense of place and meaning from 2014.

Loner in the gallery

LONER IN THE GALLERY

This is a glimpse into one of London’s grand, stately homes – a dazzling Gothic pile called Strawberry Hill House. It’s a photograph that captures the sumptuous architecture of it gallery and the order of a row of chairs set out at the end of this room. The surprise – which I didn’t notice when taking the shot – is the shoes of a volunteer guide on the right hand side, seated for a moment between visitors.

A virtual exhibition

I’ve created the mother of all galleries.

It displays 50 photographs which I think clearly represent what I do. It’s a good place for visitors to enjoy a virtual exhibition my work and make their own minds up with no text, just pictures.

I’ve seen many other photography bloggers do this, and I’ll often visit their “mega gallery” to absorb a snapshot of their world view.

The gallery will be regularly updated and amended – and might even grow. It has a permanent place in my top navigation bar so it can be easily found. It also carries a link to all the galleries in posts throughout the site.

I hope some of you will consider doing this as well, that’s if you’re not already! Here’s a little slither of the first edition of the gallery…

St Pancras views

A collection of images from St Pancras International railway station in London. You can take a Eurostar train to Europe from here, but I recommend staying on the concourse to admire the architecture.
