A Christmas collection

Bah humbug. It’s no secret that I’m not a huge fan of Christmas.

But the warm lights and cold December weather are beautiful to photograph. READ MORE BELOW

I must have an affection for Christmas lights because I’ve been photographing them for years without even realising it.

My last London flat was bright and white enough for still life sessions, while Manchester and Salford have been providing light and chill since 2016.

In 2018 I passed over a familiar Christmas with a memorable trip to Chile, where the varied and grand landscape took centre stage.

Whether you’re a Scrooge or a bright-eyed Christmas elf, enjoy the festivities.

Winter wonderland

Much of the UK has had its first taste of winter. Here in central Manchester, the show of snow was disappointing.

But in the lower reaches of the Pennines on the edge of Greater Manchester, we found a wintry wonderland. The hills near Marple were transformed to create a very memorable walk.

Snow can be a serious challenge to photograph – time to furiously adjust the white balance and find what colour you can. Worth the freezing fingertips…

Minus two

Freezing bright

The first truly bitingly cold morning of the winter. Our loft space has already been deluged by rain, but this time the frost clung onto the slanting roof windows, fighting against brilliant sunshine. The macro lens came into its own, catching the natural wonder and abstract glory of the invading iciness.

Tall and wet

Tall metal thirdsRecently, London’s winter has been one of storms from the Atlantic with strong winds and driving, torrential rain. One saving grace is that it’s been relatively mild.

These monochrome abstracts are of the newest office block here in Hammersmith, west London – tall, with acres of glass clasped together with metal.

On this grey and sodden day, the rain almost stuck to the facades and my camera lens was spattered as I peered upwards. When summer comes, this building will look sleek and piercing against a burning blue sky… we hope.

Spring for a day

View from the bench

The very same spot, but what a difference. In January there was a deep blanket of snow in Hammersmith Park, west London. You would be advised not to sit on the bench.

A number of weeks later and we experience the first day of Spring – bright, beautiful sunshine, a very pleasant temperature of 17C and the promise of green shoots on the trees.

But that was the beginning and end of the season of renewal, and now the country is frozen again – there are wintry flurries coming down outside my window now. The new season may have officially started – the weather just isn’t playing ball…
