2014 moments #10

I’ve enjoyed sharing my 10 favourite photographs of 2014 with you over recent days. These are the shots that stood out to me and had a particularly strong sense of place and meaning. You can find a gallery of the top 10 after this, the final entry.

The centre of Westminster

THE CENTRE OF WESTMINSTER

This is a piece of pure architectural opulence, captured at the Palace of Westminster in London. The nerve centre of British political life, I wondered if the likes of Margaret Thatcher had ever stopped in the Central Lobby and peered upwards at this sumptuous ceiling. I also spend a lot of time taking photographs with my head flung back – it’s worth it every time.

Loner in the gallery

LONER IN THE GALLERY

This is a glimpse into one of London’s grand, stately homes – a dazzling Gothic pile called Strawberry Hill House. It’s a photograph that captures the sumptuous architecture of it gallery and the order of a row of chairs set out at the end of this room. The surprise – which I didn’t notice when taking the shot – is the shoes of a volunteer guide on the right hand side, seated for a moment between visitors.

Jennifer Saunders I

JENNIFER SAUNDERS

A visit to the Hay Festival in June brought work and passion colliding head-on. Armed with a photographer’s pass, I spent a number of days taking shots of the great, good and famous, including legendary funny lady Jennifer Saunders. Her character comes through in this photograph, while the whole experience taught me that I can operate out of my comfort zone, capture portraits – and enjoy it.

Content without water

CONTENT WITHOUT WATER

A cluster of boats appear to lie stranded on the mud on the Thames waterfront at Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. It’s a blazing, high key shot taken on an autumn day when the sun veered between hiding behind clouds and blasting through them. This scene is a souvenir of an enjoyable trip outside London and the joys of my home county.

Pink Freedom

PINK FREEDOM

This was just one photograph from a weekend in the Hungarian capital Budapest. The elegant Freedom Bridge, which spans the Danube, is framed in a glowing pink sunset. It’s a shot that embraces the architecture of a wonderful city, offering so much for the photographer and traveller alike.
