Little bits of…

I really like to seek out details to photograph, often more than the bigger picture and grand vistas. They can be tucked away doorways, windows that are so familiar they’re ignored. I’ve visited a number of places with my camera, and have looked back over my photo archive for some of those smaller, more ordinary items. It’s anything from a line of washing on the roof of a bland building in Cape Verde to a neat beach hut on the East Anglian coast. Enjoy the significance of these little bits…

Shooting Up

This is a celebration of the thousands of times I have craned my neck to take a photograph, sometimes on my knees or sitting on the damp ground at the same moment. But there is always a commanding building or dazzling ceiling as a reward, and the chance to capture it for posterity.

Enjoy this small selection and remember a stiff neck or a pair of dirty knees is always worth it…

2014 moments #10

I’ve enjoyed sharing my 10 favourite photographs of 2014 with you over recent days. These are the shots that stood out to me and had a particularly strong sense of place and meaning. You can find a gallery of the top 10 after this, the final entry.

The centre of Westminster

THE CENTRE OF WESTMINSTER

This is a piece of pure architectural opulence, captured at the Palace of Westminster in London. The nerve centre of British political life, I wondered if the likes of Margaret Thatcher had ever stopped in the Central Lobby and peered upwards at this sumptuous ceiling. I also spend a lot of time taking photographs with my head flung back – it’s worth it every time.

Pink Freedom

PINK FREEDOM

This was just one photograph from a weekend in the Hungarian capital Budapest. The elegant Freedom Bridge, which spans the Danube, is framed in a glowing pink sunset. It’s a shot that embraces the architecture of a wonderful city, offering so much for the photographer and traveller alike.

Budapest album

This is Budapest

Here are my reasons why the Hungarian capital is a great place to visit with a camera and tripod.

  • It’s an elegant city with many architectural landmarks to capture, including the stunning parliament building and the bridges which cross the Danube. There is always something to shoot.
  • Budapest is packed with attractive detail, from its stonework to iron decorations. Your macro lens can come into its own here.
  • It’s a city with views. Clamber up Castle Hill or to the imposing Liberty Statue and you’ll enjoy a bird’s eye view of Budapest. A great chance to practise those panoramic shots.
  • After dark, the city shimmers and is ripe for night photography. Some landmarks are so well illuminated that long exposures and a tripod aren’t necessary.

Enjoy my view of Budapest and I hope you have a chance to see it soon – it’s also a place worth returning to.
